Understanding how things stand up
What has fascinated me for as long as I can remember is building, technology, anything that moves and evolves. Understanding how things hold, and why some do not, has been my drive since childhood.
I started out building houses, as an architect, alongside my father. That is not just another line on a background: once you have drawn plans a building's soundness depends on, you never look at software as a sequence of screens again. You look at it as a structure, with load-bearing points and places where it gives.
Business school came next, then software. The thread never broke: in all three, the work is understanding a system before touching it.
Four years developing, then my own tools
I spent four years as a developer before turning to my own projects. For the past five years I have been designing my trading algorithms. My own, end to end, from the idea through to code running with real money on the line.
It is an unforgiving field. A trading algorithm runs unattended, decides on its own, and a mistake is not undone by an apology email. You have to think through the edge cases before they arrive, never after. That is exactly the discipline a platform needs when it takes orders while its owner is asleep.
And projects for the fun of it
On the side I regularly build small projects, for no reason other than wanting to see whether it works. That is what separates someone who codes because it is the job from someone who codes at weekends too: tools, languages and practices move fast, and you only keep up by building, not by reading.
What I like, deep down, is the precise moment an idea stops being an idea and becomes something that works.
Today
At Lunnar I take design and construction, Sébastien takes architecture and security. But we both work across the whole of a project: at two people, sealed borders would produce a tool designed in halves, and it would show.
There are two of us, and we say so on purpose. You know who is working on your project, and there is nobody standing between you and the people building it.
